Sandra Dose · Market Commentary

This is the first monthly note I will write concerning what's going on in the markets. I may also use information from Schwab. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Markets & Tariffs

The markets are down, and up, digesting global events. There's a lot of them. The US Supreme Court said President Trump could not use certain emergency powers to levy tariffs on imported goods. The President has vowed to find another way to levy tariffs using a different authorization. Many economists consider tariffs to be a tax on American consumers. Ronald Reagan didn't like them. In the early days of the Great Depression Congress passed a tariff bill in 1930. Economists say the Smoot Hawley bill rapidly and greatly increased the scope of the Great Depression. As an aside, a movie taking place in the depression that I like is Cinderella Man, chronicling the life of boxer James J. Braddock. It stars Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger.

Global Events & Commodities

Other global events impacting the markets include Iran, Israel, the fallout from Jeffrey Epstein-related associations in Great Britain and more. Gold has reacted moving sharply higher. Will gold retrace its recent highs? Something I'm watching. Silver is higher, but not as much.

Where the Indexes Stand

Both the Nasdaq composite, where many tech stocks trade, and the S&P 500 are back at levels where they were in October. They were both higher recently, but have pulled back about 5% or so. The Dow Jones is only 30 stocks. It is higher than in October, but has also pulled back.

The Hidden Cost of Tariffs

Here's something else to consider about tariffs and the stir they're causing economically. Since the end of WWII the US dollar effectively has been the global currency. The dollar now has dropped a few percentage points in value. Other governments have been selling dollars because of the tariffs and other concerns about Washington and other potential global events. When the dollar is worth less, it costs more dollars to buy imported products. The drop in the dollar's value is what some economists consider to be a hidden cost of tariffs. There's another hidden cost that I'll address in the next Wealth Matters.

Protecting Your Portfolio

In these uncertain times what's going to happen to your portfolio, and your legacy, if the markets drop? An index could fall 20% before it becomes a bear market. How would you feel if the markets dropped that much or more? Do you know how your advisor will protect you and your family? If you don't know we should talk. Phone, in person, or a zoom. Contact me if you don't know how your advisor will protect you.

I welcome your questions or comments about investing and the markets or other things that are on your mind. Just let me know.

Wealth Matters — April 2026

Sandra Dose · Market Commentary

I do what I say I do. As you can see on my website, I say I practice active and responsive wealth management. After the start of the war with Iran the markets became very volatile, taking a sharp and rapid drop. The NASD composite dropped more than 13 percent. The S&P 500 dropped more than 9 percent. Prices of oil and gasoline shot up and remain high. I think the US will prevail in its conflict with Iran. At the same time, the markets’ volatility brings uncertainty. There are a lot of moving parts internationally. Who knows how some countries might react to this Middle East conflict, perhaps trying to appear more powerful than they are. There may be new alliances forming.

Because of the market uncertainty, I sold some stocks. I began by looking at issues that may have been performing slower. At one time the accounts I manage were about 50% in cash in aggregate. Some accounts may have had more cash, some less. The reason I do this is because the 13% decline in the NASD takes a return of almost 15% to get back to where you started. I have now bought back stocks. Some may be issues I sold earlier. Generally, I have bought stocks that have been performing better in my opinion. Volatility like this can be viewed as a time to do a little weeding in order to try to improve the overall quality of a portfolio.

There are several other events happening now which may impact the markets. The United Arab Emirates announced it is leaving OPEC. Will Saudi Arabia let this happen? Will this break OPEC , and its price controls on international oil prices? Will our gasoline prices decline? It would be nice if they did.

What is happening with Russia? Its economy is only about the tenth largest in the world. By contrast the economy of the state of California is listed as being about the 6th largest in the world if California were an individual country. California is bigger than Russia. An article in the Washington Post on April 27 by Catherine Belton and Natalia Abbakumova said the mood in Russia is bleak, as its people grow weary of the war with Ukraine. What is this war doing to the Russian economy? .

Hurray for Omaha. Forbes in an April 22nd article says Omaha is the second best city for Gen Z because they have a chance to buy a house under $300,000. Omaha’s population grows by 30-40,000 visitors this time each year for the annual influx of people attending the annual Berkshire Hathaway meeting

A reminder that May begins the time of year when markets historically usually aren’t as productive. Of course, each year brings its own adventures and opportunities. I welcome your questions and comments. Consider me to be a resource for your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, anyone who may have questions regarding their wealth.
